How to Reset Admin Password on Mac

Before you begin

Ensure that your Mac is connected to the internet and that you are running macOS Catalina or later.

We all have dozens of passwords to remember. Because your Mac password,  is one of the most important, forgetting it can be a nightmare. But it’s not the end of the world.

There are a few simple steps you can take to reset your Mac password and ensure you never lose it again.

The methods listed below can be used to Reset Your Admin Password on a Mac.

Methods for Resetting the Admin Password on a Mac

1.Entering recovery mode is the simplest way to reset your admin password.

2.Using your Apple ID, reset your password.

3.Using Another Admin Account, Reset Your Password

Method 1:  Through recovery mode.

  • Step 1: Reboot your Mac.You must restart it because you can only access the recovery mode while the laptop is booting up.
  • Step 2: While the computer is restarting, press and hold the Command + R keys together until you see the Apple logo. In case if you see the login screen, restart your computer and repeat this step until you reach Recovery Mode.

Step 3: Go to the Apple Menu at the top and select Utilities. This will open a drop-down menu, then click Terminal.

Step 4: In the terminal window, type “resetpassword.” There should be no space between the words.

Step5: Then hit Enter. This will open the Reset Password Assistant screen.
Step6: Type your password and a hint.

Finally, click Restart. When you reach the Login screen, select the admin user whose password you just reset and enter your new password. Enter your password and press Enter.

Method 2: Reset your Password Using Apple ID

If you try to log in several times, a pop-up message will appear asking if you want to reset your password using your Apple ID. To proceed, take the following steps:

  • Step 1:Click the arrow to sign in with your Apple ID.

Step2: Enter your Apple ID and password.

  • Step 3: Finally, press the Enter key. You will then be prompted to restart your computer.

  • Step 4:To continue, click Restart.

  • Step 5:Enter your new password and log in.

You have successfully reset or changed your password if you can access your desktop.

Method 3: Reset your Password Using Another Admin Account

If your Mac has multiple users and you know the login credentials for other accounts, you can log in and reset your password using that account. Here’s how it works:

  • Step 1:Log in to a different admin account.

  • Step 2:Navigate to System Preferences. This can be found in your Applications folder.

Step 4: In the bottom-left corner of the window, click on the padlock. You will be prompted to enter that user’s username and password again.

Step 5: Select the user whose password you want to reset, then click Reset Password.

  • Step6: Fill in the necessary fields and hit Enter.

  • Step 7:Finally, log out of your current user account. This will take you to the Login page.

  • Step 8:Log in to the account for which you just changed the password.
